Overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and warm spiritual leader, teacher, speaker and pastoral caregiver who will build strong and meaningful relationships with members of the congregation.   The Rabbi will work with Cantor Lois Welber and an active Board of Directors in addition to the congregation.

Religious and Spiritual Leadership Responsibilities:

• Conduct Friday evening Shabbat services with sermons. (Our year begins after the High Holy Days and ends with Shavuos. We schedule approximately 23 services during this time. We do not hold services over the summer.)

• Conduct High Holy Day services with sermons

·  Conduct holiday services and lead holiday programming

• Lead Jewish learning sessions through evening adult educations classes and Sunday morning breakfasts. (We currently schedule approximately 20 sessions.)

• Provide pastoral support to congregants. (Approximately 5 hours/week of in-home, in-hospital or phone contact, on average.)

• Perform life cycle rituals

• Contribute to the Temple bi-monthly newsletter

• Assist the Temple in its strategic mission and goals to retain and increase membership

• Other responsibilities may be required depending upon circumstances

Timing Expectations: TBI has successfully employed a Rabbi in a part-time position for the past 35 years, and we have worked to ensure that this is a true part-time role. Please see the timing expectations outlined in our job description. We are open to discussing the timing expectations with candidates.
Community Description:

Temple B’nai Israel (TBI) is a progressive, warm and caring community. Founded in 1906, TBI has a rich heritage and tradition and serves a population of approximately 80 households (50% are single person households; majority of congregants are over 50). TBI was formerly affiliated with the Conservative movement, is unaffiliated at present, and has evolved to offer a diverse and inclusive approach to our congregation. TBI recently switched from Sim Shalom to Mishkan T’filah for our prayer books in order to increase accessibility.

Qualifications:

We will consider ordained Rabbis and students approaching ordination. The ideal candidate will be warm, engaging and flexible, and should be able to for connections with a range of ages and levels of Jewish observance. Should be able to comfortably carry a tune. Must be comfortable leading services with Cantor support and on your own in the Cantor's absence. Must be able to work effectively with an active Board of Directors.
