Overview
The Shefa School is seeking a Lead Judaic Studies teacher for September 2018 to teach
in classrooms of 11-13 students in the middle school grades (6-8). Training and
preparation will begin over the summer.
Key Responsibilities:
The Lead Judaic Studies teacher will be responsible for developing curriculum and
teaching in the areas of Chumash, Mishna, Chagim, Navi, and other Judaic curricular
areas. Teachers will also be responsible for creating curriculum around and leading
morning tefilla. Teachers will be responsible for infusing Jewish life and learning into all
areas of the curriculum, including by collaborating closely with general studies teachers
to facilitate interdisciplinary assignments. In addition to developing curriculum and
delivering instruction, teachers will be responsible for assessing student learning,
managing classroom routines and behavior, building relationships and communicating
regularly with families, collaborating with other faculty, and modeling Jewish values for
students. Teachers will also participate in planning Judaic programming in the school as
well as interdisciplinary programming.
The Shefa School is a Jewish community day school in Manhattan, currently serving
students in grades 1-8 since opening in September 2014. Shefa enrolls children who
benefit from a specialized educational environment in order to develop their strengths
while addressing their learning challenges. We specifically serve students with language based
learning disabilities who have not yet reached their potential levels of success in
traditional classroom settings. Shefa is a pluralistic community school, serving families
across the range of Jewish involvement and observance. Shefa students have varying
degrees of prior knowledge and experience with Jewish learning and we strive to instill in
each of them the love and skills they need to learn and identify with Jewish texts and to
feel personally engaged and a part of Jewish communal life.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have a depth of training, expertise, and passion in the field of
Judaic Studies and Jewish life as well as experience using multisensory instruction and
experience in working with students with language-based learning disabilities. We seek
teachers who have experience with designing and developing differentiated curriculum
that is accessible to a range of learners with varying degrees of background in studying
Jewish text and in Hebrew language. Candidates must have a strong understanding of
pluralism and embrace the philosophy of pluralism through his/her teaching.
We seek candidates who demonstrate flexibility and comfort with risk-taking and
ambiguity. We seek teachers who thrive in collaborative environments, who are reflective
and committed to growth, and who have strong communication skills. Applicants must
have at least 3 years of teaching experience and should hold or be working toward a
relevant Masters Degree.
