Overview
Emanuel Congregation, an inclusive reform synagogue located in Chicago, is seeking an Executive Director to help lead our 275-member congregation. The Executive Director partners with the Head Clergy, the Director of Lifelong Learning, and the Board of Directors to continue our work within the Edgewater and larger Jewish community. This position will help implement our 3-year strategic plan and begin to envision the next steps of the community.
Emanuel Congregation has over 140 years of history and a membership of 275 units. A member congregation of the Union for Reform Judaism, we provide worship services, cultural life, education, and other activities. Emanuel is a welcoming and spiritually seeking congregation, providing opportunities for all those who wish to engage in Jewish life through prayer, study, social action, and communal gathering while supporting each other in times of joy and sorrow. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent ideal, master’s degree preferred.
Non -profit management experience required; Experience in a Jewish synagogue and/or Jewish organization preferred.
7 years of experience as a senior manager/administrator or Executive Director
Fiscal oversight responsibility; experience of 1 million budget minimum preferred.
Experience and knowledge of people management, with demonstrated success in creating positive and productive work environment.
Experience with databases, shulcloud and QuickBooks preferred.
Experience with Microsoft 360 and google.
Self-starter, creative work problem solver with strong interpersonal and organizational skills, including ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal).
Ability to take initiative.
Enthusiastic, organized, and good follow through. Highly motivated, positive, and flexible
Ability to effectively work in a team environment with staff, Clergy, congregants, and school families.
Expected work hours:
Monday through Thursday, 8:00am–4:00pm,
Friday 8:00am – 3:00pm.
Evening and weekend hours will be required at times, in lieu of weekday hours.
Pay range 85,000-94,000, depending on experience level.

About
Financial/Operations
The Executive Director is responsible for financial oversight of the annual budget and long-term financial goals in partnership with the Treasurer, Financial Secretary and Financial Committee. Emanuel has a part-time bookkeeper who assists with the daily financial tasks and reports directly to the Executive Director. The Executive Director also oversees the building maintenance and operations in collaboration with the part-time Director of Operations and an outside facility firm. This includes maintaining and enhancing relationships with space sharers (renters) in the building.
Management/Human Resources
The Executive Director ensures compliance with the current state and federal laws as it relates to synagogue operations. They are responsible for hiring, training and supervising all direct reports and contracted staff. The ED also provides information and guidance regarding HR needs of Religious School staff. Promotes a positive strength-based work culture of teamwork, diversity, collaboration, open communication and overall respect. The Executive Director also provides annual reviews of staff that they supervise and develops guidelines and protocols for time off.
Administrative/Board of Directors
The Executive Director enhances the administrative policies, systems processes and procedures, further identifying opportunities for growth and efficiency. They report to the Board on all matters of concern for the synagogue and community. The Executive Director works closely with the Temple President in governance work, meeting agendas and implementation, board retreats and board development. They also work closely with all staff to create a master calendar and keep it up to date.
Fundraising
The Executive Director coordinates and oversees expanding fundraising efforts and individual donor cultivation in collaboration with board members and consulting firms. They are also responsible for seeking out grant opportunities and preparing grants and managing others who do so.
Membership/Communications & Marketing
The Executive Director works collaboratively with staff and board members on membership recruitment and retention. They ensure systems are in place to help this process. The Executive Director also oversees marketing and communications in collaboration with the communications professional on staff and ensuring it aligns with the synagogue's mission and goals.
