Overview

The Elon University Jewish Educator enriches the lives of students and shapes the future of Jewish life on campus by inspiring students to live and lead Jewishly. The Jewish Educator is responsible for facilitating “Tikkun Olam” projects, multi-faith initiatives, informal conversations and joyous celebrations. They are an accessible, engaging, knowledgeable presence on the Elon campus who is responsible for creating and guiding meaningful learning opportunities for students and Elon faculty and staff.

The Jewish Educator develops and maintains relationships with students and increases the level of involvement and commitment of students in all aspects of Jewish life on campus. Most of all, they help to carry out Elon Hillel’s mission to “Be a welcoming, lively and inclusive community that provides empowering, innovative and joyful Jewish experiences, inspires discovery and ownership of personal identity, prepares students for life beyond college as leaders and community members and embraces the dynamic diversity of Jewish traditions.”

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Student Engagement

  • Build relationships with students from diverse backgrounds through meaningful conversations and by creating connections to opportunities to participate in Jewish life on campus.
  • Build relationships across Elon with other students, faculty, and staff as an ambassador of Jewish life.
  • Keep track of and expand on meaningful opportunities for engagement.

Religious Life

  • Develop and support pluralistic, vibrant Jewish experiences.
  • Convene student leaders to develop plans for creative and meaningful holidays, including Shabbat, High Holidays and Passover.
  • Increase interest in and excitement for Birthright Israel and other immersive experiences.

Jewish Learning

  • Provide Jewish wisdom and guidance that is relevant and accessible.
  • As a Hillel team member, shape and develop the mission and educational vision of Jewish life at Elon.

Student Mentoring

  • Mentor students, including board members and interns, as they contribute to Hillel and the campus community.
  • Listen and build on the ideas of students and encourage creative, innovative approaches to planning and implementing programs, services, and Tikkun Olam initiatives.

Multifaith Engagement and Pastoral Care

  • Develop and nurture relationships with Truitt Center staff members, Student Life, Elon community members, and local Jewish communities.
  • Serve as a pastoral presence who earns the trust of and connects with students wherever they are – Jewishly or otherwise.

Qualifications:

Education, Experience and Skills:

Advanced degree in Jewish studies, Jewish education, or a related field, or Rabbinic ordination.
3+ years of relevant work experience. Experience in Hillel, youth movements, camping, or experiential Jewish education is a plus.
Training and experience in compassionate caring, administration, development/fundraising is desirable.
Proven success as a team member who is excited about working with others to continue to grow Jewish life at Elon.
Expertise in facilitating complex conversations about Judaism, Israel and other topics in a way that is approachable and meets students at various points in their personal Jewish journeys.
A commitment to creating an inclusive, welcoming vibrant and pluralistic Jewish community.
Willingness to work and lead in a multifaith community.
A strong entrepreneurial spirit. Things may not always go according to plan, but you must be willing to take risks and learn from your wins as well as your losses.
Confidence in initiating, planning, and running programs.
Ability to mentor students to achieve success and willingness to step aside and bask in the joy of their leadership.
Willingness to listen and build on ideas, and comfort in asking questions.
Ability to collaborate across teams both inside and outside of Hillel.
Strong interpersonal, verbal and written skills and demonstrated attention to detail.
