The Job:

Tulane Hillel seeks a creative, action-oriented and extroverted person to engage in two distinct, yet integrated, areas of work. Firstly, the team member will manage a large portfolio of student-driven projects which are by & large of a start-up nature. Additionally, this person should have a strong background, fluency & knowledge base in Judaism, to execute Tulane Hillel’s innovative Jewish curriculum across the organization. Our work uses values and methodologies that embrace and align with a user-centric mindset.

Student Entrepreneurship

The Director will engage with their portfolio of student leaders, in idea development; event planning; marketing and PR; people and relationship management and community organizing. A compelling candidate for this position will be able to build numerous and diverse relationships. Responsibilities will include working with a large portfolio of student leaders to ideate, plan, implement and execute programs on Tulane’s campus and in the City of New Orleans. This process requires functioning in an organizational culture of “listening” and understanding our students; their individual identities, interests, and passions.

Jewish Life

This person will also lead the Jewish curriculum component of Tulane Hillel, managing Tulane Hillel’s Shabbat and Jewish holiday programs and acting as a resource and generator of Jewish life across the organization. Tulane Hillel creates a Jewish life that is open, accessible, and diverse. This important work will be integrated into all aspects of our community activities. The person will leverage their Jewish fluency to illuminate Jewish connections across a diverse constellation of activities, people, and ideas. The end result will be to establish a rich organizational Jewish culture via accessible and integrated Jewish learning embedded in Tulane Jewish Leaders programs, staff training, social media, our building – and other vehicles as appropriate.

There are 3 major functions of this position:

1. Work as part of a 4 person team in managing the overall Tulane Jewish Leaders (TJL) student recruitment & program strategy.

2. Mentor a portfolio of students in the Tulane Jewish Leaders (TJL) to create diverse programs and initiatives that will engage their peers and build community on campus.

3. Develop & execute Tulane Hillel’s Jewish curriculum and oversee annual Jewish holidays & programs.

Responsibilities Explained: 

1.    Work as part of a 4 person team in managing the overall Tulane Jewish Leaders (TJL) student recruitment & program strategy.

– Identify and engage both motivated and uninvolved student populations and work with students to develop programs and events that resonate with the Tulane student body.
– Meet a wide array of Tulane students. Strategically identify, engage and recruit students who would be great Hillel student leaders.
– Work collaboratively and/or independently to positively impact the organization.
– Represent Tulane Hillel on campus with students, faculty, and administration as appropriate, as well as with the wider community.
– Participate in weekly professional supervision with the Executive Director or Chief Operating & Programs Officer and in staff meetings.

2.    Mentor students in the Leading Forward: Tulane Jewish Leaders (TJL) program to create programs and initiatives that will engage their peers and further the Jewish connections they make on campus.  340+ student leaders launch over 120 initiatives and programs each year. These activities have ranged from everything to a recurring farmer’s market; movie viewings & discussions; basketball tournaments for charity; Jewish holiday celebrations; issue discussion groups; an art show; challah baking & sales for charity; an Open Mic night and more.

Manage a portfolio of TJL students and mentor them in the process of creating initiatives.
Build individual relationships with TJL student leaders in order to understand the interests/talents/backgrounds of each student in the program and to be able to maximize their potential.
Mentor students in coordinating and being responsible for all aspects of the programs you are working on with them, ranging from logistics to publicity, budgeting and strategic thinking as it relates to broader organizational goals.

3.    Lead Tulane Hillel’s Jewish curriculum & Jewish life programs.  The Director of Jewish Life & Student Entrepreneurship is the organizational lead on continuing to develop methodologies for embedding Jewish teachings and values throughout the organization, to include staff trainings, work with student-organized TJL programs, facility use et cetera.

Lead Shabbat organizer, booking various Tulane organizations to serve as Shabbat partners & managing service leaders and the overall Shabbat experience
Lead High Holiday organizer-managing the various aspects of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services and meals, organizing Passover Seders
Program lead on all Jewish holidays – spearheading student involvement in creating programs around Sukkot, Tu Bi Shevat, Purim, Passover et cetera.
Resident Jewish curriculum expert, fine-tuning and executing methodologies for embedding Jewish teachings and values throughout the organization, to include staff trainings, work with student-organized TJL programs, facility use et cetera.

Organizational Relationships:

The Director of Jewish Life & Curriculum will supervise multiple students and will serve as a mentor and advisor for student leaders.

The Director of Jewish Life & Curriculum reports to the Chief Operating & Programs Officer with whom they will have weekly one-on-one supervision meetings to review tasks, reflect on position, and to problem solve and recognize accomplishments.

Qualifications:

Qualifications:

- The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership and people-organizing skills along with exceptional interpersonal, speaking, social media and writing skills.
- The candidate must work well in a team and be willing to work outside of normal business hours.
- The candidate must have a strong background & interest in Jewish knowledge and life.
Strong organizational and time management skills are required.  Event planning and/or management experience is desirable.
-  Passion, energy, innovative spirit, an ability to engage, flexibility and a good sense of humor are all essential.
-  Past experience developing a project or initiative, from an idea to an executed reality, and/or coaching individuals or groups to bring a project from idea to reality.
A strong Jewish background and a minimum of a year or more of full-time, summer, or internship/apprenticeship employment is required & 2-4 years of full-time experience are ideal. A major, minor or graduate studies in Jewish Studies, and/or-or a background in non-profit work/volunteerism would provide strong and transferrable background for this position, but are not required.
