Overview

The City Congregation for Humanistic Judaism, based in New York City and one of the largest Humanistic congregations on the East Coast, is presently seeking a rabbi. This is a unique opportunity to serve as the philosophical and religious leader of a vibrant and progressive community of secular Jews. This is a part-time role in which you will have the support of a lay leadership and volunteer committees.

What You Will Do
As the rabbi of The City Congregation, you will partner with our engaged congregation in four key areas: 1) education; 2) liturgy; 3) care of the congregation; and 4) organizational work.
Education includes overseeing the KidSchool and planning adult education programs for twice per month sessions, from September through June.
The liturgical area includes leading services for Shabbat (approximately two per month, September through June), Jewish holidays, and Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
The care of the congregation includes valuing and inspiring the congregants, helping them build and sustain a sense of community, representing them to the larger Jewish community, and attending to individual pastoral needs.
Organizational work includes attendance at board meetings, advising committees, cultivating new members, fundraising, and related writing. All of the work presupposes a commitment to Humanistic Judaism.

Qualifications:

What You Will Bring

  • Must be ordained by a recognized Jewish seminary or an appropriate rabbinic training program
  • Commitment to and passion for the philosophy of Humanistic Judaism and the values and priorities of The City Congregation, which include learning; social justice; diversity; and creative Jewish cultural expression
  • Experience as a leader of a diverse community
  • Superior interpersonal, presentation, and written and oral communications skills, including
    facility with social media
  • Compassionate concern for the well-being of others as expressed through pastoral care
    and/or outreach
  • Enthusiasm for membership development, fundraising, and outreach through direct
    solicitation and social media

  • Ordained by a recognized Jewish seminary or appropriate rabbinic training
  • Committed to the philosophy of Humanistic Judaism
  • Excellent communication, leadership, interpersonal, and presentation skills, and familiarity with social media
