Role Overview
The Hillel at Texas A&M University (TAMU) seeks a dynamic, creative individual to serve as the Senior Jewish Educator to help enrich the lives of students and shape the future of Jewish life on campus, while working collaboratively in an interdenominational space. As a rabbi, you will provide leadership for the Hillel community through spiritual connection and community engagement. As the Senior Jewish Educator, you will develop and maintain relationships with students less engaged with Jewish life and will increase the level of involvement and commitment of students in all aspects of Jewish life on campus. Embrace your magnetic personality to inspire students to make Judaism integral to their life choices and expressed Jewish values. Youll meet students exhibiting their strong Aggie pride on campus and in the local community, while learning about long-held TAMU traditions that are unique and make this friendly campus one-of-a-kind. This is so much more than your average 9-to-5 job.

What Youll Do

  • Develop and support vibrant Jewish experiences; inspiring Shabbat and holiday traditions and services; and educational programs that help students shape their Jewish ideology and identity.
  • Identify needs of the Jewish communities on campus that are underserved and develop strategies for meeting these needs with proven community organizing and outreach methods.
  • Build relationships with students from diverse backgrounds through meaningful conversations and by creating connections to opportunities to participate in Jewish life on campus.
  • Serve as a key Jewish educational resource for students and professionals on campus, helping to mentor and enrich Jewish journeys and emerging Hillel student leaders.
  • Officiate life cycle events on the campus and in the community.
  • Work with students to create pro-Israel initiatives and Holocaust remembrance events.
  • Accompany students on their Israel Birthright experience.
  • Build relationships with rabbis, parents, faculty and other community stakeholders, and use those relationships to support and/or raise funds for Hillel initiatives.
  • Represent and speak for the TAMU Jewish community through campus chaplaincies; Engage with on-campus partners to enhance campus culture and keep the Jewish community integrated with the larger campus community.
  • Represent Hillel in the local and regional Jewish community through rabbinic organizations, participating in community functions and other activities.

On a Day-to-Day Basis, You Will

  • Build one on one relationships with students.
  • Set up meaningful learning opportunities for students to study Judaism, and teach our Jewish Learning Fellowship program.
  • Develop meaningful programs about Israel.
  • Build relationships with the leaders of Jewish fraternities and sorority.
  • Meet with students interested in creating a new social justice initiative at Hillel.
  • Train student leaders interested in learning to lead Shabbat services and rituals.
  • Market and develop orientation sessions for Birthright Israel and Alternative Breaks.

What Youve Accomplished

  • Rabbinic ordination.
  • Experience in community organizing, Hillel, youth movements, camping, or experiential Jewish education is a plus.
  • Proven success in community building and outreach, and previous experience in program visioning and implementation.
  • Training and experience in counseling, administration, development/fundraising is desirable.

  • A love for Israel and the ability to be an informed advocate about issues facing the Jewish state.
  • A commitment to creating an inclusive, vibrant and pluralistic Jewish community.
  • A strong entrepreneurial spirit. Things may not always go according to plan, but you must be willing to take risks and learn from your wins as well as your losses.
  • Confidence initiating and running programs.
  • Creative problem-solving, proactive communication, and collaboration.
  • Ability to collaborate across teams both inside and outside of Hillel.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team and to prioritize and handle multiple assignments and projects.

About Texas A&M Hillel
Founded in 1920, Texas A&M Hillel is the oldest U.S. organization referred to as Hillel. TAMU Hillel moved into a beautiful 18,000 square-foot facility in 2012, located directly across the street from the campus. The building serves as a meeting place for students as well as the Jewish sorority, Jewish fraternity, and Jewish Faculty Network.

Opened in 1876, Texas A&M is a co-educational, public, research university. With an enrollment of over 50,000 students, Texas A&M is the 6th largest university in the country and ranks 19th among public universities according to the 2011 U.S. News and World Report. The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, one of thirteen presidential libraries, is located on the campus. TAMU is a pro-Israel campus; the administration has developed close ties with a number of Israeli institutions including Weizmann Institute of Science. The renowned Texas A&M culture is a product of the university's founding as a rural military school. Although military training is no longer required, military ideals are still upheld. Students, called Aggies, value service, honesty, duty, community and tradition. Current and former students exhibit the Aggie Spirit, a sense of loyalty and respect for the school and each other. As a Senior Military College, Texas A&M is one of three public universities with a full-time, volunteer Corps of Cadets. A&Ms Corps is one of the largest uniformed student bodies outside the service academies. TAMU is also widely known for its athletic program.

The Bryan-College Station metropolitan area offers the modern amenities of a big city mixed with Texas warmth and small-town charm, making this one of the most vibrant and friendliest communities in which to live. The area's economic and social life is centered on A&M; thus, the area is popularly known as "Aggieland" College Station has a safe community, a regional medical center, and an excellent public school system. Sports lovers will appreciate the beautiful parks and recreation centers, and there is a broad spectrum of museums, art galleries, and theater groups and an array of tantalizing restaurants. Bryan-College Station metropolitan area is located within 100 miles of Houston, the fourth largest city in the U.S., and Austin, the Texas state capital. College Station has a commuter airport which connects College Station to Dallas and Houston. Houston has two international airports and Austin has one.

The Jewish population of Bryan-College Station is about 1500. In addition to Hillel, Bryan-College Station supports a Jewish Faculty Network, a Chabad Center, and a Reform congregation (Congregation Beth Shalom). Local supermarkets sell Israeli food imports and kosher foods are available in both Houston and Austin.
