Overview

Temple Har Zion in Mount Holly, NJ, a small (70 family) innovative congregation, is searching for a FT/PT rabbi/cantor to begin July 1, 2019 or as soon as possible after that.

We are a warm, egalitarian synagogue established more than 80 years ago, and have been joyfully davvenning in both the Conservative and Jewish Renewal traditions for many years.  Our members enjoy taking leadership roles in services, programs and social action.

Our services alternate between conservative-ish and Jewish renewal with musical (instruments encouraged), meditative, and mystical elements.  We are seeking a new spiritual leader with strong Torah knowledge, excellent Hebrew/Torah reading skills, and an understanding of Kabbalah; we love a good four-worlds Torah discussion during services.

We also are looking for someone with good interpersonal skills; a personal spiritual practice, and an excellent ability to communicate across many platforms.  We value the ability to spiritually nurture and intellectually engage our members, offer leadership to our Hebrew school, and be available to congregants for life cycle events and rabbinic counseling.  Southern New Jersey offers great opportunity to be involved in the area Jewish and interfaith communities.

Our new spiritual leader will lead some Friday night and Saturday morning services and most Jewish holiday and festival services.

Our Hebrew School meets on Sunday mornings, serving a small group of dedicated learners. Having rabbinic/cantorial/spiritual leadership there is important to us.  Our congregants are also interested in continuing their own Jewish and spiritual learning and we’d like our rabbi/cantor to periodically offer adult education classes.

We look forward to hearing what you have to offer Temple Har Zion. Please send your resume with a cover letter and references to: rabbisearch@templeharzion.org.

Community Description:

We are an egalitarian congregation; it has been our tradition that everyone cover their heads, and everyone don a tallis if called for an Aliyah. Our Torah blessing cards are written with traditional Hebrew on one side, and in the feminine on the flip side; congregants choose the side they prefer. We have new Conservative siddurim (Lev Shalem) with gender-neutral and matriarch-inclusive language; some congregants continue to change “G!d, He” to “G!d,” or “The Lord,” when we read aloud. Some of our congregants use feminine language (Hebrew and English) for prayers. We use Ivdu Et Hashem B'Simcha for Renewal services.

Work Remotely: no
Qualifications:

The rabbi is the primary employee of the congregation and is expected to lead at least four (Friday night/ Saturday morning TBD) Shabbat services per month as well as services for most holidays, including High Holidays, Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot.  We have a cantor only on High Holidays, so the rabbi should have a good singing voice.  Within contracted parameters, we expect the rabbi to do outreach to congregants, work on fundraising, plan/work with committees to plan and run assorted holiday and educational programs and be available for pastoral counselling, life-cycle rituals, and bikur cholim.  We will also negotiate rabbinic involvement in Hebrew school, B’nat mitzvot (we have 3-4 a year) and adult education.

Rabbinic Ordination or a Rabbinic Student nearing the end of their studies and with some experience.

Familiarity with both Jewish Renewal and Conservative services.

Position Start Date: July 1 2019 or as soon as possible after
