Overview

BASIC FUNCTIONS:

The Executive Director will work collaboratively with the Senior Rabbi and the President of the Board of Directors to shape, promote, and execute BZBI’s strategic vision, as we move our congregation forward in creative and engaging ways. The Executive Director is responsible for the overall business operations of BZBI, including the management of 6 of the 10 members of staff. Specifically, the Executive Director is accountable for the areas of finance, communications, human resources, facilities management, compliance, and technology.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Draft a multi-million-dollar budget in partnership with the President, Treasurer, and Finance Committee of the Board of Directors; ensure adherence to the budget and established financial performance markers.
    As fiduciary, work in partnership with the Finance Committee for the timely collection of annual sacred gifts (dues) from BZBI members.
  • Support the Clergy and members of the Board of Directors with development and fundraising.
  • Communicate effectively with BZBI members, stakeholders, and partners on a regular basis, in conjunction with the Board of Directors when necessary.
  • Oversee BZBI staff and implement all HR policies and protocol, including annual performance plans and staff reviews.
  • Maintain and/or improve physical facilities and assets, including technology, and ensure the safety and security of our building.
  • Comply with all federal, state, and local regulations and work with the City of Philadelphia and other local constituencies about synagogue issues that affect the larger community.
  • Actively promote BZBI and help to grow our congregation.
  • Maintain a professional, active presence at BZBI functions; cultivate and nurture relationships with congregants; and address congregational concerns in a timely manner.

Founded in 1840, Temple Beth Zion-Beth Israel (BZBI) is a vibrant, growing congregation in downtown Philadelphia with approximately 450 member units.  BZBI is committed to an open, inclusive, and egalitarian Conservative Jewish tradition and is affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. Our mission is to provide religious services, educational programs and classes, and cultural, social, and recreational activities for the Jews of the Greater Philadelphia community, especially those living or working in Center City Philadelphia.

Qualifications:

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of management experience in the areas of finance, development/fundraising, administration, human resources, facilities management, and/or IT.
  • Sound business acumen with proven ability to lead a complex and diverse organization.
    Proven ability to (1) develop and implement strategic plans, (2) understand financial strategies and performance metrics, (3) build strong, collaborative relationships, (4) create clear internal and external communications, and (5) demonstrate strong leadership in business operations.
  • Experience with a variety of management and governance models.
  • Expertise with hiring, coaching, and performance management.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Judaism and Jewish culture preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
