Overview

We are Temple Beth Israel Shaare-Zedek, a small, vibrant Reform Judaism synagogue located in Lima, Ohio that functions with the intimacy of a chavurah. A part-time Rabbi has faithfully been our spiritual and educational leader for several years but now plans to relocate. We are seeking another part-time Rabbi to join us beginning July 1, 2020.

Type of service are you envisioning: We want a Rabbi who plans and leads their own services and works with Cantor and Accompanist on the music selections and alternate with the Cantor for a reading from the Torah. We like prayers to be translated especially when there are non-Jewish guests in the building. Cut into an extreme amount of Hebrew in the service that they understand that most of the music will be in Hebrew and we like prayers to be translated.Not into an extreme amount of Hebrew in the service but they understand that most of the music will be in Hebrew and we like prayers to be translated The rabbi will give a timely sermon most likely based on the Torah portion.
How do you do Jewish : We are a Reform-Conservative merged synagogue. We prefer Reform Services with Mishkan T’filat Machzorim.
Why you need a rabbi: Pulpit Rabbi, Jewish Educator, Bar/Bat Mitzvah training, Memorial Services, Pastoral Care, Weddings or Funerals. We like continuity with one rabbi.
Timing Expectations: Arrive by Friday afternoon and stay over through noon or later on Saturday twice per month plus all maor holidays.
Rabbi Qualifications: Reform rabbi needed. We are affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism
Community Description:

Our Jewish community in northwestern Ohio was established more than 100 years ago and is an inclusive, participatory and egalitarian blend of many Jewish traditions. Temple Beth Israel Shaare-Zedek is also the only synagogue for at least 50 miles in every direction and a focal point for Judaism in the region. Our congregation includes a wide spectrum of religious backgrounds, although we are predominantly Reform and Conservative. Our Synagogue is a place for both learning and celebration—Shabbat, D’var Torah, The Festivals, High Holidays, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and other life cycle events. In other words, we do things larger congregations do, just on a smaller scale.

Qualifications:

Ordained rabbi through Hebrew Union College. Live within 3 (+/-) hours drive of Lima, OH located in northwest, OH. We are between Toledo & Dayton off I-75. Friday night Shabbaton 2x per month, stay overnight at a local hotel for Adult Learning class on Sat. AMs. Come for all major Jewish holidays & High Holidays. May hold other jobs. Visit sick/shut-ins, do Bar/Bat Mitzvah  training, funerals (including mid-week if necessary), plans own services, can work with our part time Cantor & accompanists. Pay is negotiable. Benefits:

Rabbi will be an independent contractor and file his or her own 1099 & purchase own benefits. We provide up to $750 for CCAR conference registrations. Rabbi would have the entire month of July off, but needs to be available, plus the last two weeks in December off for vacation. We only ask for two weekends out of every month for the rabbi’s presence.
