Bais Abraham is a warm, welcoming, inclusive modern Orthodox synagogue located in the University City area of St. Louis, close to Washington University. The shul combines observance, serious davening, and deep Torah study with creativity, openness, and community care and service. Bais Abe values women in leadership, and women participate in all aspects of shul life within halacha. Our synagogue is surrounded by stately, quiet neighborhoods and adjacent to the Delmar Loop, a vibrant urban area. We are seeking a rabbi with Orthodox smicha, deep Torah knowledge, strong interpersonal skills, self-motivation, excellent speaking and teaching skills, who is a mensch.

Qualifications:

A rabbi well-versed in Torah and secular knowledge:

  • Has Orthodox Smicha as well as a college degree.
  • Has the depth of learning to provide Psak Halacha on communal and personal issues.
  • Proficient in leading davening and leyning as needed.
  • Whose teaching and speaking help us navigate the complexity of modern-day life.
  • Preference for strong spoken Hebrew language skills.

An educator and role model for religious observance and practice

  • An inspiring teacher who can reach people of different ages and with different educational and religious backgrounds.
  • Able to motivate and inspire religious involvement and employ creativity in engaging people for daily minyan attendance.
  • Engage the youth within the community and helps foster their connection to Torah as a relevant force in their life. He should build and maintain relationships with children from their participation in Shabbat groups, preparation for Bar and Bat Mitzvah, and throughout their high school years to help shape their Jewish identity as young adults.
  • Work with the congregation in enhancing the role of women within synagogue life, including expanding educational opportunities and religious experiences.
  • A halachic and spiritual leader who sees the importance of integrating Jewish identity and Orthodox practice with our roles in the modern world.
  • Be actively involved in synagogue-sponsored Hebrew School for Israelis.

Sensitive and Approachable Provider of Pastoral Care and Counseling

  • Provide Psak Halacha with sensitivity to the diverse backgrounds of the congregation.
  • Be available to provide counseling, guidance, and visits to the sick.
  • Serve as a pastoral leader, guiding congregants through lifecycle events and showing sensitivity to individual situations and needs.

A leader who will be active in synagogue operations, development, and event planning

  • The rabbi will supervise staff, including the Director of Operations, part-time Program Director, part-time Shlicha, as well as volunteers.
  • He will assist the lay leadership in fundraising activities, soliciting donors, identifying potential grant opportunities, and drafting grant proposals.
  • Meet with prospective members and ensure they are warmly welcomed by and integrated into the community.
  • Take a lead role in developing programs designed to appeal to current and prospective members and the larger community, including outreach to local university students.

Communal Leader

  • Support the local Orthodox and community Jewish day schools and actively participate in other local institutions as vital to the growth and vibrancy of the wider Jewish community.
