Overview

The American Federation of Teachers is seeking a rabbinical student (or recent graduate) for a one-year fellowship to work with the AFT to deepen the connection between the labor movement, public education and Jewish life in the United States. Under the supervision of the AFT’s Human Rights and Community Relations department and in coordination with the student’s academic advisor, the fellow will study the AFT and the labor movement to develop text studies and sermons connecting these topics. The fellow will develop a strategic plan to deepen the Jewish community’s engagement with and support of organized labor and public education. The fellowship shall culminate in a conference bringing together labor leaders, rabbis, rabbinical students, cantors and cantorial students to explore the issues of public education, organized labor, and the Jewish community.

Fellowship terms:

The fellowship and course of study must be approved by the student’s college and/or academic advisor;

The fellow is expected to commit 12 months to the fellowship and final project;

At least 15 hours during the academic year and 25-35 hours during Summer months will be spent at AFT headquarters in Washington D.C; and

Compensation shall be $20.00 per hour of work at AFT, plus travel and housing 1 night per week during the academic year.

In addition, the AFT represents approximately 80,000 early childhood educators and nearly 250,000 retiree members.
