Overview

Plainview Jewish Center (PJC) is an egalitarian, Conservative synagogue in Long Island, NY (Nassau County). We are seeking a part-time, Cantor starting on or about July 1, 2019.

Plainview Jewish Center is a forward-looking, family-friendly synagogue which respects and incorporates traditional Jewish values.  We are completely egalitarian and inclusive in all aspects of synagogue life. PJC strives to provide a distinct, positive Jewish identity through worship, life-long education, enrichment, and community involvement.  These practices ensure a congregation in which every member matters. We provide full service programming for a large congregation along with the warmth and friendly atmosphere associated with a smaller synagogue.

The Cantor is our musical leader. PJC is currently seeking a part-time, Cantor to preside over high-holiday, festival and designated Shabbat services and other related responsibilities. In addition, the candidate will be expected to read Torah and participate in monthly Friday night family friendly services. The ideal applicant will be creative, flexible, enthusiastic, forward-thinking, and motivational. The candidate will have the personality, knowledge, flexibility, and sensitivity to meet the needs of the congregation, be proficient in vocal, and preferably, instrumental musical abilities, and work well with our Rabbi.

Timing Expectations: We are seeking a candidate who will be available most, if not all, Shabbatot, Yamim Noraim, Chagim (including Pesach seders and Simchat Torah) and Purim.We would be open to a candidate who is available on Sundays to work with our Religious School and during the week for B'nai MItzvah tutoring as well.

Plainview Jewish Center serves the Jewish communities of Plainview-Old Bethpage, Hicksville, Bethpage, Syosset, Woodbury and all surrounding areas. P.J.C. is unique among major Jewish congregations on Long Island. We provide the full service and programming of a large congregation, along with the warmth and friendly atmosphere associated with smaller synagogues.

Qualifications:

We are seeking a candidate who is well versed both in traditional nusach and contemporary Jewish liturgical music. The ideal candidate should have a cantorial degree from a recognized institution and at least two years experience working as a cantor in a synagogue. The candidate should be able to play an instrument such as keyboard or guitar that can be used during a service to enhance the prayer experience. Experience working with B'nai Mitzvah students a  plus. Candidates who will drive on Shabbat will be considered.
