Overview
Mishkan Chicago, a radically inclusive, post-denominational spiritual community on Chicago’s Northside, seeks a full-time Associate Rabbi to serve our thriving and diverse community alongside our Founder, Rabbi Lizzi Heydemann. We seek a candidate who embodies a love of pastoral care and brings a talent for teaching, appreciation for music, and overall vibe of chesed/loving kindness. Started 2011, Mishkan Chicago now reaches over 4000 individuals each year in person through our weekly Shabbat services, holiday celebrations, classes, and small groups and thousands more online via Livestream and Soundcloud. With close to half of our members under the age of 40, we lead people across a spectrum of identity, background, age, and belief toward more purposeful, more connected, and more inspired lives.
Primary responsibilities will include:
-Collaborating with Rabbi Lizzi on weekly Shabbat services, holiday celebrations, and our high holiday services.
-Pastoral work within our community, including one-on-one meetings and lifecycle support (officiating clergy for lifecycle events includes weddings, funerals, BMitzvahs, shiva minyanim, batei din, etc in a rotation with Mishkan clergy).
-Helping run our children and family programs (including BMitzvah preparation) in collaboration with the Vision Director and staff of our Mensch Academy, and serving as a primary point of contact for families going through lifecycle rituals.
-Offering the spiritual leadership and teaching that undergirds our social justice efforts.
-Overseeing Adult Education by conceptualizing and teaching a variety of classes throughout the year. Current classes include our conversion program, meditation group, interfaith programs, first time-parent group, and a variety of Jewish learning experiences. There is an opportunity to develop more programs in the realms of grief support, mental health and wellness, and other demographic or pastoral affinity groups.
Mishkan is a growing and ever-evolving organization; other responsibilities may arise including the opportunity to work with different segments of our large and diverse community.
The ideal candidate is an ordained rabbi from any of the egalitarian seminaries. The ideal candidate also embodies strong initiative, creativity and a love of collaboration, organizational skills, flexibility, deep knowledge of Jewish sources and tradition, a lot of energy, and a love of people. Having a strong relationship with the prayer experience is a key qualification. Community organizing experience is also a major plus.
A generous benefit package.
Please send resume, cover letter, video links and other relevant materials by March 31, 2020 to careers@mishkanchicago.org with the subject line Associate Rabbi Search.
