Overview
Levey Day School of Portland, Maine, is a vibrant small school in a thriving small city. We take advantage of our intimate size to provide students with a personalized education. Under the leadership of our current head of school, our teachers have developed inspiring multi-grade curricula infused with Jewish values and Hebrew language, and our board has honed the school’s mission while strengthening its capacities in governance and fundraising. Our head has chosen to pursue other professional opportunities at the conclusion of the 2017–18 school year. Levey seeks a dynamic head of school who can help us realize the school’s mission and values and effectively reach out to prospective families unfamiliar with this hidden gem. Review of applications will begin on August 1, 2017; the position will begin on or about July 15, 2018.

Levey is the only Jewish day school in Northern New England. Founded in 1952 as an Orthodox institution, Levey has been a non-denominational community school for several decades. Our school is deeply committed both to its Jewish identity and to the diversity of its student body. Levey families belong to all five Portland-area synagogues (Reform, Conservative, Modern Orthodox, Chabad, and unaffiliated). We also proudly educate students from non-Jewish families attracted by Levey’s warm and welcoming community and by the personalized, values-oriented education that Levey provides; about one-quarter of our students belong to families that do not self-identify as Jewish. All of our students benefit from close interactions with classmates of different beliefs, ages, races/ethnicities, and family structures. In addition, Levey cultivates socioeconomic diversity by fully meeting the demonstrated financial need of all our families.

Review of applications will begin on August 1, 2017. The search committee will interview semifinalist candidates in late August or early September. We will invite finalists to Levey for a more comprehensive series of interviews with representatives of the school’s constituencies and hope to appoint our next head of school in late October or early November. The position will begin on or about July 15, 2018.
