Overview

The Oregon Hillel Foundation, which serves the University of Oregon and Oregon State University, seeks an entrepreneurial go-getter to be the full-time Director of Jewish Student Life, overseeing Jewish life at Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR. The Director will be motivated, energetic, and engagement-focused in their work as the solo full-time Hillel professional at Oregon State. They will have the opportunity to build on the success of our part-time staff and join them in continuing to develop a flourishing Jewish student community at OSU.

This professional will support the work of the Jewish student leaders, engage students in meaningful Jewish conversations and experiences, expand the leadership pipeline and cadre of leadership students, and serve as a connector between Oregon Hillel and activities around the state and nationally. The Director of Jewish Student Life will report to the Executive Director of Oregon Hillel, who also supervises the part-time Jewish Educator of the growing program in Corvallis. In its fourth year at Oregon State, The Oregon Hillel Foundation has created a core group of Jewish students who were otherwise underserved and is now looking for a professional staff to provide ongoing support and leadership to help further develop Jewish student life on campus.

The Director of Jewish Student Life will work to empower students by providing them with tools and resources to create programs that energize Jewish life on campus. He/she will also work to build relationships with the University Student Life staff to help integrate Hillel into the broader campus context.

About

What You’ll Bring to the Job:

  • A Bachelor’s degree (major or minor in Jewish studies is preferred) and 2 – 3 years of professional work experience.  Experience as a volunteer or professional in a Jewish organization is preferred.
  • A team-oriented approach to work while still being a self-starter, a strong work ethic, a sense of humor, an ability to take risks and learn from situations.
  • Strong written and verbal skills, effective at communicating with a variety of stakeholders.
  • A passion for Judaism and an ability to inspire students, through role-modeling, to make Judaism integral to their own life choices.
  • Knowledge of, and comfort with, explaining and using Jewish terms and texts (mostly in English).
  • A willingness to work atypical hours (evenings and some weekends) and travel. You will work in multiple locations for this position.
  • An eagerness to learn and grow as a Hillel professional.

 

As the Director of Jewish Student Life, a Typical Day May Include:

  • Talking with a group of student leaders to coordinate an upcoming service program.
  • Being part of the Oregon Hillel staff, meeting and brainstorming strategic ideas.
  • Greeting a prospective student family on a tour, giving them the shpiel about Jewish life at the Oregon State, and introducing them to students.
  • Building meaningful relationships with key university staff and faculty members that may yield productive partnerships for Oregon Hillel.

What You’ll Own and How You’ll Grow:

Outreach and engagement

  • Develop and implement an engagement strategy (in tandem with the Executive Director) that will utilize volunteer student leadership and paid interns to grow the reach of the Jewish community on campus.
  • Personally engage students in Jewish conversations face to face, through social media, and through other creative means.
  • Connect students to Jewish resources and opportunities nationally and globally.

 

Student Leadership Oversight

  • Advise the student board.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director to develop strategies and train student leaders committed to engagement and creating a larger campus community.
  • Support student initiated programs and ensure quality control; attend key programs when support is needed (includes some evenings, weekends, Shabbat, and Jewish Holidays).

 

Core Programming & Administration

  • Initiate programs in specific areas of focus, based on assessed needs and student interest.
  • Plan for, recruit, staff, and follow up with domestic and international alternative spring break service trips; staff Taglit-Birthright Israel trips as needed.

 

Supervision and Professional Growth

  • Participate in weekly professional supervision with the Executive Director and weekly staff meetings.
  • Take advantage of periodic professional development opportunities offered by Hillel International, the Oregon State, or other opportunities that are of interest to you.
