Overview

Congregation Shir Heharim seeks an interim half-time spiritual leader for our small Reform Congregation in South East Vermont. Our current leader, a cantor, will be on sabbatical from July 1, 2019- June 30, 2020. Our congregation includes 100 member units and our synagogue is housed in an old refurbished farm house on several acres of beautiful rural land not far from Brattleboro. For larger gatherings we have access to rental space in a Unitarian Church. We currently offer services three Saturday mornings and one Friday night per month in addition to celebrations of other holidays.  We have an involved community, an engaged board and many active committees and are known for our love of music and commitment to social justice. Hebrew School is on Sunday afternoons. Applicants may be invested Rabbis or Cantors, those nearing the end of their religious education or with comparable training  or experience, and may come from other denominations. We seek someone who is flexible and outgoing and can step comfortably into our vibrant rural community that includes a diversity of Jewish practice and expression. Good organizational and communication skills are important.

Responsibilities Include:

-Plan and lead Shabbat Services 2 or 3 times a month. Plan and lead holiday observances including High Holidays. Singing or musical ability is a big plus.
-Officiate at lifecycle events for congregants including funerals, weddings and b’nai mitzvah.
-Provide pastoral counseling with congregants who are ill or seek informal counsel as needed.
-Write a brief weekly message and a longer monthly column.
-Direct Hebrew School (currently 12 students) by supervising teachers and curriculum as well as leading B’yachad and teaching as needed.
-Prepare a small number of B’nai MItzvah students with a class and one on one tutoring which may be scheduled in person or by skype.
-Organize 2 or 3 community education programs throughout the year.
-Coordinate with other synagogue members for a published calendar and to prepare for the above. Participate in monthly board, ritual and Hebrew School committee meetings.

Candidates need not live in the area full time but we would prefer that they live within an hour or be willing to spend some nights within the community. We will make efforts to help an appropriate candidate locate temporary housing.
